Hire Car Airport of Cagliari
Hire a car from Maggiore in Cagliari and you’ll be free to discover this enchanting city and its surroundings. Start off with two breathtaking views that give you a panorama of the whole city: the first is from the Bastione di Saint Remy, the second is from a promontory called Sella del Diavolo which you’ll be able to visit thanks to your Maggiore hire car.
Cagliari is a little gem overlooking the sea, and is a fantastic place to relax on the beach: the Poetto, an 8 km stretch of white sand with gold. Behind the wheel of your hire car, you can plan a fabulous trip along the coastal road from Cagliari to Costa Rei: it’s a sequence of beautiful beaches, some lined with small ponds with low dunes and Mediterranean brush reaching down to the sea, while others are next to pine and eucalyptus woods. A few kilometres after Chia is the highly recommended beach of Tueredda, an absolute must-see, which you you can easily get to with your Maggiore hire car along the panoramic road that’s a pleasure to drive along.
Nature lovers should pay a visit to the Laguna di Santa Gilla and the Stagno di Molentargius, to the west and east of Cagliari. The protected zone of Molentargius is one of the few places in Italy with a resident population of breeding flamingos.
There are also many major archaeological sites in the area, such as Tuvixeddu, the largest Punic necropolis in the whole of the Mediterranean, the Roman amphitheatre, the ruins of the Roman city of Nora, the nuragic shrine of Santa Vittoria at Serri and the Nuraghe Arrubiu at Orroli, the largest nuragic complex in Sardinia.
During World War II, Cagliari was the target of numerous bombings. The city put up great resistance, earning it the military gold medal of honour on 19 May 1950. The city’s botanic Gardens also played an important part as its tunnels provided protection to the townspeople who used them as air shelters.
