Hire Car Airport of Palermo

Hire a car from Maggiore at the Famcone and Borsellino Airport and discover Palermo, a splendid city that has always been a fusion of Oriental and western cultures.

Sicily’s capital has an impressive artistic legacy thanks to its thousands of years of history, and UNESCO has defined it as Europe’s largest historic centre. The old quarter is enchanting: with the Kalsa, Vucciria, Ballarò, Capo and Albergheria districts, it’s an intricate maze of narrow streets adorned with stucco, marble, statues, bas-reliefs, gold, light, chiaroscuro effects and trompe l’oeil.

The Cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary of the Assumption, is certainly worth a visit because of its unique blend of styles. Initially built as a place of Christian worship in 600, it was converted into a mosque by the Saracens in 800 and was then converted back into a Christian church by the Normans in 1100.

Between one itinerary and the next, why not take a break to enjoy the famous street food of Palermoarancinepanelle and the thick Sicilian pizza, sfincione, or sample the local sweets such as granita, cannoli and cassata. You’ll discover that Sicily has a unique gastronomic legacy.

With your rental car, you’ll also be able to visit the wonderful sights to be seen around Palermo. In just half an hour, you can get to Monreale and admire the famous Arab-Norman cathedral, and stop off at one of the “polipari”, octupus vendors, who sell boiled, chopped octopus. There’s also Bagheria, also known as City of the Villas because of the splendid aristocratic residences dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

An hour’s drive away from Palermo’s airport you’ll find the splendid Cefalù, where you’ll be enchanted by the spectacular seafront and beautiful beach. For nature lovers, the Riserva dello Zingaro is a must: on the E90 road you’ll reach Scopello, where you continue on foot to discover this nature reserve characterised by luxurious flora and picturesque coves.

Did you know that ice-cream, one of the glories of Italian gastronomy, is thought to have been invented in the aristocratic houses of Palermo, where the locals enjoyed various flavours such as watermelon, jasmine and cinnamon. A legacy of the Arab domination of Palermo, il gelato came firstly from “sherbet”, from which the Italian word sorbetto was derived.

What are you waiting for? Take advantages of Maggiore car hire offers and discover Palermo!
